Founded in the 1980s by David Williamson, DSPS Engineering provided exhaust system solutions to motorsport, with the main driver being the reduction in size and weight of exhaust system components. Perry Cohn has worked with David since the late 1990’s and took over the company in 2016. The drive for excellent engineering solutions continues, with quality driving everything we do.
The first big project for DSPS Engineering was the supply of new wastegates to the CART Indy Car series in the mid 1980’s and that was the start of the journey. As well as providing quality solutions to motorsport problems, relationships were formed with OEMS and Engine suppliers, many of which remain to this day.
Evolution of expertise
The pace of development in motorsport leads to advances being made quickly and we have developed expertise in heat tolerance and control, as well as knowledge related to airflow, both hot and cold, through an engine.
Starting with a wastegate in the mid 1980’s, we developed high temperature membranes to cope with heat soak, later developing anti-lag technology for use on rally cars and then introducing sensors to allow wastegate and anti-lag systems to be monitored, whilst in use. Sensor development continues to this day, as does an electronic wastegate.
As mentioned above, DSPS was involved with the design and production of a new generation of smaller, lighter wastegates for the motorsport market in general, Indy Car in particular. As always, many of our developments have come about from listening to our customers. Discussions with some engine manufacturers in the 90’s led to the development of an early anti-lag system, which has been systematically developed and improved over the years.
Motorsport is a fantastic proving ground for products that have to survive in hostile conditions. The development of reliable products for these conditions has led to some of our products being regularly used on some Supercars and Hypercars.
Notable achievements
DSPS products have been used and won multiple championships in Indycar, WRC, Indy Lites, RallyX, LeMans, WEC, GT Racing, DTM, SGT, WTCC, Dakar and also F1.
Advanced technologies and materials
Quality drives everything we do, particularly performance. We use any technology at our disposal in order to achieve the optimum result, from materials used, to manufacturing techniques, through to inspection and traceability.
The harsh environment of motorsport applications pushes components and assemblies to their limits. The excessive heat and vibration experienced buy race engines has necessitated the use of aerospace materials such as Nimonic 80A, Inconel, Titanium and aluminium alloys.
Global reach and partnerships
As mentioned before, DSPS formed close working relationships with OEMS and Engine suppliers, many of which remain to this day. As a result, DSPS products can be found across the globe, competing in race series on every continent.
Business is all about relationships, and DSPS prides itself on the relationships formed with customers. DSPS products have been found on the race engines of the majority of OEM’s over the past 4 decades and will continue to do so.
